Organization And The Environment
One of the fundamentals of organization work is the fit between the organization and the environment. All organizations are in continual interplay with the external world. The organization acts on the environment, learns from it, and adapts. The environment acts on the organization, learns from it, and is changed. How you and your organization apply what you learn and adapt can be more strategic and more under your control than can how a nonintegrated environment beyond your control will adjust to you.
So we suggest that you first look outside at what you have to match, then inside at your purpose and what you want to do. Without some sense of purpose, however, an environmental scan can be all over the map, overwhelming in size, and hold little real interest for the explorers. You must have some way to focus and scan without overly limiting the possibilities for discovery.
